GRAFFITI THROW UPS – UNDERSTAND THE BASICS

A graffiti throw up also known as a throwie is a writer’s tag made with outlined letters added single color fill-in and a shadow. A throw up should be simple, easy and fast to do, something you will remember by heart and could just ‘throw up’ on a wall at any given moment – hence the name. To make these bubble-like letters, you take the outline from a normal handstyle letter. Imagine that you take the handstyle letter and blow it up like a balloon. Now we can play with fill-ins, shadows, drips and cracks.

Characteristics
of Throw Ups

While throw ups seems simple, they got unique characteristics that set them apart from other types of graffiti. These features include:

Bubble Letters:

Throw ups primarily consist of bubble or block letters, made with rounded shapes. This style allows for quick making, perfect for graffiti writers on the move.

3D Effects:

To make it more visual, throw ups often have 3D effects. Shadows, highlights, and perspective are added to create depth, giving the letters a dynamic appearance.

Filled Colors:

Vibrant and contrasting colors are used to fill in the letters, adding energy and visual interest to the throw up.
Writers experiment with color combinations, gradients, and patterns to make their creations stand out.

THE LOG RULE

To make these letters in the beginning, you can use the log-rule. The log-rule is dividing the letters parts and areas into shapes/logs, so the whole letter is easier to make sense of – like if you were making letters with matches. This rule helps you to keep the overview of where and how many parts of a letter that are overlapping.

Try to see if you yourself can make outlines from the letters H, X & S
